This game is better than the first in every way, and iterates on the first game's combat in really good ways as well. The soundtrack is phenomenal. The art direction is beautiful. The voice acting is good, the writing is good. To me the "bad" voice acting of the first game just was as a result of weaker stories, but genuinely I think they nailed it this time. This game is almost a masterpiece. I did not feel that about the first game. In comparison, the first game feels very soulless. It's almost really sad that a lot of people felt the soullessness of the first game and didn't give this game a try. This game definitely has all the soul missing from the first game.

I decided to play this game on the strength of a Steam review that described it as "You fight capitalism and then you fight god." A pithy statement that actually captures well the grandiose themes of a game that, through cute graphics and a few storylines about being a great dancer and eating lots of jerky, tackles some truly complex and difficult questions. Can the wealthy ever be anything but greedy? Can the oppressed ever truly be free? Why do we value life, when so much of it is strife and sorrow? Octopath's main charm, for someone like me who plays RPGs mostly for their plots (and subplots, and side quests) and world-building, is its premise of offering a stunning eight parallel plotlines, evolving side by side as your travellers explore a world that is beautifully crafted and detailed, full of wonders and dangers. In fact, Octopath is a much more immersive experience than I had anticipated, and even with its relatively simple graphics and mechanics manages to create a vast world where every town has its own quirks and tensions, and memorable characters evolve alongside your gaming experience. As in all RPGs, the balance between character interaction, exploration, and fights is crucial, and I would say that in OTII this balance is quite good: simply by exploring the world and leaving no stone unturned I was able to level up my characters, and equip them with powerful enough items, to make it all the way to the end and beat the (very challenging) final boss. I have read opinions of players who found the game way too easy or, conversely, too hard at times, but I would say that (as a fairly casual gamer, and even though a couple of fights kept me on my toes) I thought the balance was alright. Back to the plots and characters, I would say that all eight protagonists are compelling and well-crafted, and that the game's mechanics, which forces you to play with all of them at various points, actually pushes you out of your comfort zone and encourages to explore the full gamut of what Octopath II can offer. The eight plotlines felt, perhaps, a little bit disconnected for most of the game, which made the final stretch feel slightly jarring - but this is a fairly minor complaint. The random encounter dynamics is one of the most tedious aspects of JRPGs for me, and it did feel a little boring at times (especially when you have to cross areas that are wildly below your characters' level), but this didn't happen often, and I rarely had to travel back and forth just to level my characters up. I think this is first and foremost a beautiful, moving game - alternately touching and silly in the manner of much Japanese storytelling - that will reward anyone looking for an immersive RPG. It's easy to pick up and the complexity curve is quite slow, so that, by the time the really hard bosses start appearing, you should have mastered most of the game's mechanics. A couple of twists were really unexpected, a few plots really packed a punch, and I found myself deeply invested in this game and its world, much more than I expected. It's proof of a great story when, after 85 hours of it, you are left wishing that you could experience more of it. Highly recommended!

Better than Octopath 1 in terms of game play in pretty much every way, but I liked more of the individual characters of 1 than I did 2. However the cast in 2 has much more opportunities to interact with each other, and the Quality of life features makes it hard to play 1 after playing 2. I recommend trying out both games, but definitely recommend playing the first game before this.

I'm hungry While SE is experimenting with their main series like Final Fantasy they decided to bring back the old days with a modern spice by making Octopath Traveler 2 and it just works. It's and awesome jRPG where you play as 8 characters and go on a journey to uncover their past until all of their stories collide. Those who played this already know my favorite character and the character I chose from the name of the title. Yes you choose the main character and the story begins from there. The game is sliced into character chapters which are spread around the world and for the most of the game are not connected with each other. Each character is very different and offers a different story and different reasoning for adventuring. This keeps the game fresh throughout the story. From the first sight it's a standard turn based jRPG. But inside its shell, it's pretty innovative (by today's standards) and unique experience. Combat while seems very basic at first, is extremely deep and complicated. It provides multiple ways of defeating the enemies. Unlike in many other games, non-jRPG's included where there's usually one way to be the best, here you build different parties and use different skills and abilities to achieve victory. I can't stress enough how fun the combat is, at times it feels like tactical rpg. Every boss has its own gimmick so all the encounters with them feel different since you have to use different approach. As per usual you have attack, skill, item, defend commands and so on. But the point is that characters compliment each other and their combat potential is unlocked fully when they work together. Which means buffing, debuffing, healing, powering up, etc. And different combination of travelers could lead to different tactics but same victory. Enemies on the other hand hand have shields. You must break the shields to do more damage to them. There a physical shields and elemental shields. To break physical shields you must attack with physical weapons. But also you must reveal the shields because they're hidden behind a question mark. They're weaknesses, hit them with right weapon/spell and the weakness is revealed. The only annoying thing is that characters who are not in the current party are no leveling up. That leads to wasting time on grinding which I hate the most. Although you don't need the highest level to achieve your goals, it still helps. Mostly it's a combinations of gear, items and abilities which wins the fights. Oh and finally there's day/night cycle. You change it at any time. It affects the monsters which spawn and some of the skills. And while at first it seems you can only change them manually, soon you realize that it has real cycles, if you wait long enough you'll see sun coming up. Every character has its own default job which provides unique abilities which can be used in both – combat and outside of it. And speaking of “outside the combat”, we have plenty of side quests in this game which usually are not present in jRPG's or are very basic and function like fetch quests. Here a lot of the side quests have it's own story lines and could take traveling around the world to complete. Later on every character can learn one additional job and on top of that you have secret jobs, no character knows by default. Each job provides new abilities and tactical opportunities. Another thing you can do is to interact with most npc's. You can steal from them, bribe them, persuade to give you information, learn new skills, knock them out, even hire them as followers who can help you in combat. All of that could give you powerful items, unlock new locations, various perks such as discounts or new items in the shops or reveal the location of hidden items in the world. It's also used for completing some of the side quests. Graphically the game looks very simple from the first sight, but when you start playing you start noticing how good it looks and how much artistic style means. The game gorgeous. It combines pixel art and old school looks with modern technology to make fro an impressive visuals. Sound design is another area this game shines. Game is almost fully voices (every story dialogue and ending dialogues of the side quests). Voice acting is really good in jRPG standards. But where it really shines is the soundtrack. It's magnificent. A true masterpiece of a soundtrack. Each location has its own music. It also changes depending of the time of day. And then we have boss fights where soundtrack goes absolutely bonkers. Performance is great for obvious reasons and the game has no native ultrawide support. But it works surprisingly well with ultrawide fix. This game is a breath of fresh(old) air in jRPG genre. If you love such games it's a must play. Don't be afraid of the price, it's more than fair. It's a game made with passion which is rare these days. Pros [*]Looks very pretty [*]Outstanding soundtrack [*]Good voice acting with most of the game voiced [*]Fresh take on the genre with interactable npc's and side quests [*]Extremely deep combat system [*]Multiple stories blended together [*]Eight characters to choose from [*]Epic boss fights [*]Job system Cons [*]Leveling up everyone is painful [url=https://store.steampowered.com/curator/32930811-Kosmos%27s-Cosmic-reviews/?appid=704030] Follow my curator page for more [url=https://www.twitch.tv/crazykosmikbunny] My Twitch

A Journey Worth Taking OCTOPATH TRAVELER II is a stunning JRPG that masterfully combines its unique HD-2D art style with refined gameplay mechanics. As the successor to the acclaimed first game, it delivers a captivating experience with deeper storytelling and enhanced world-building. Having played the first game, my expectations for the sequel were higher than most, which inevitably influenced my evaluation. Strengths OCTOPATH TRAVELER II shines in several areas that elevate the overall experience: ✔️ Improved Narrative: Each of the eight protagonists has a distinct story that feels more interconnected and dynamic compared to the first game. The "Crossed Paths" feature, which facilitates interactions between characters, was present in a limited form in the original game but has been significantly expanded here, adding more depth to the stories. ✔️ Stunning Visuals: The HD-2D art style has been further refined, blending pixel-perfect character sprites with beautifully rendered environments and effects. It’s a visual masterpiece from start to finish. ✔️ Enhanced Combat System: The Break and Boost mechanics return with more depth, making battles both strategic and rewarding. New additions, such as Latent Powers, add another layer of tactical decision-making. ✔️ Open Exploration: The non-linear progression allows players to explore the vibrant world at their own pace, fostering a sense of freedom and discovery. ✔️ Outstanding Soundtrack: The orchestral score perfectly complements the emotional beats of the game, from intense battles to serene village moments. Weaknesses Despite its many strengths, the game does have some flaws that could affect the experience: ❌ Grindy Gameplay: Leveling all eight characters can sometimes feel repetitive, especially for players who prefer a more streamlined experience. ❌ Disconnected Storylines: With eight separate stories, the quality and pacing of the narratives vary greatly. Some arcs feel drawn out, while others rush through key events too quickly. ❌ Pacing Issues: The combination of lengthy grind phases and isolated storylines creates uneven pacing, occasionally disrupting the flow of the game. (Not) Recommended for Recommended for: • Fans of classic JRPGs who value deep storytelling and strategic combat. • Players who enjoyed the original OCTOPATH TRAVELER or are drawn to unique art styles. • Anyone looking for a vast and immersive world to explore. Not Recommended for: • Players who prefer fast-paced or linear experiences. • Those who dislike grinding or managing multiple characters. Final Verdict Having played the first game, my expectations for OCTOPATH TRAVELER II were particularly high. The sequel builds on the strengths of the original, especially with the more refined implementation of "Crossed Paths." Despite minor weaknesses such as grind-heavy gameplay and disconnected storylines, the game largely met my expectations. For fans of the genre, it’s unquestionably a journey worth taking.
