Its fun BUT it doesn't seem to know what it wants to be. On one hand it feels like the game is meant to be like a dayz or rust with multiplayer focus as you need to place a workbench to start a base,have to pay upkeep and if another player gets to it can claim it for themselves. Also the availability of guns seems to lean in that direction. But then also... The game has mechanics that feel more like project zomboid where you have to be quite or alert hords, have a certain period of time until the water and electricity goes out you learn skills like mechanics, building electricity lockpicking cooking etc. Have diffrent effects based on smell or the food you ate. You can turn on the heater in the car if its freezing outside. All great But there its kinda missing a feature that made zomboid in my eyes so good. The ability to clear towns. The zombies always respawn and hordes seems to just be an increased spawn rate. It feels cheap when i clear the prison stealthily just to see everything has respawned on my way back. Zomboid actually moved zombie hordes across the map which is just really imersive and it makes something like shooting a gun to lure out zombies meaningfull. In zomboid one of the best things was killing hordes of zombies after you baited them out of their building. So what my main complaint would be is that i would like the option to have consistent zombies.
I hope this reaches the devs. As a father of 4, all but a few 30 minute intervals throughout the day to power my steam OS legion go S and jump into a game, I’m really enjoying this game offline. I’m able to pause and put my device to sleep without issue and start playing right where I left off. I love these types of games but unfortunately, these types of games are mostly online only, like DayZ for instance. I’m able to slowly create a base over different sessions without completely getting obliterated by other players while I’m offline. Please don’t change the offline!
I'm going to be honest, I was very critical of this game for the first hour or so. It has that Early Access quirks that you expect: weird AI/animations, iffy performance, clunky combat, and a (relatively) small map. All that being said, I think this game has huge potential. For being made by two people, the level of detail is astounding. Buildings are beautifully decorated and designed, and towns feel like they are plucked right out of real life for you to explore. I have to agree with other reviews saying that this plays like a (albeit very early on) first person Project Zomboid. The devs are very active4 on their discord and have been knocking out steady updates every few weeks, which is appreciated and very promising. Basically to summarize how I feel, the game is janky but you will be surprised with how deep the mechanics are. $20 is about right for this kind of game, and it is more like supporting the development rather than just a hard purchase. If you can get past the early access barrier, you will love it. And if not, just wait a bit and see how things evolve.
