Styx Master of Shadows is a rare game that commits to pure stealth, without being power fantasy or an action pretending to be stealth. And while it is undeniably janky experience, Styx has a surprising amount of heart beneath all of that rough exterior. Not unlike its main protagonist, I suppose xD Styx himself is the main draw. It’s been a long time since I’ve enjoyed a protagonist this much. His jokes don’t always land, but the voice acting, personality, and overall characterization carry him hard. His visual design is excellent, and he’s memorable in a way many AA protagonists simply aren’t. Level design is another strong point. The environments are clearly built for stealth, offering a myriad of ways to move through them — crawling, climbing, sneaking, both above or below enemies. That said, the game tends to give you little incentive to explore those locations beyond collectibles, and the second half of the game falls into a familiar AA trap of heavy location reuse. With only seven missions, each split into zones that get revisited multiple times (some more than twice), this repetition becomes rather noticeable and frustrating by the third act. Still, within those seven missions, the game manages to showcase a surprisingly wide variety of interesting locations, despite being constrained to one human-dwelling city, the Tower of Akenash. The difficulty curve is also well-made, with the game gradually introducing new obstacles that help in keeping things fresh. The hand-drawn still-image cutscenes are clearly low-budget, but they’re beautifully voiced and drawn in really fun, expressive style, Personally, I kept on looking forward to each new one. The world and story are fairly by-the-numbers in some respects, yet genuinely interesting and even unique in others. Now for the jank — expect inconsistent ledge grabs, and enemy detection that can feel unpredictable. Though not once has the game crashed on me, or even softlocked me, so there is that. Unreal Engine 3 still has poor object culling though xD In the end, Styx is flawed, clunky, and sometimes repetitive, yet it’s also a rare pure stealth-focused experience, with real personality, atmosphere, and genuine charm. If you want a game that actually respects stealth as its core mechanic, this one is worth your time.

99% of negative reviews come from people who don't know marketing Assassin's Creed as a stealth game is customer deception. The 1% come from people who are just plain simple on the not-cute side of the spectrum. Styx: Master of Shadows is the perfect stealth game. Come on, guys, it's in the title. It's not Styx: Master of Carnage. It's not Styx: Master of Freerunning. It's Styx: Master of Shadows. Which means you gotta be the Master of Patience. I know it's hard in this world, but patience is important. Like I tell to my kids: Patience brings LEGOs and yummies. To the game itself: It's got humor. It's got atmosphere. It's got a very decent plot twist, which is something I can appreciate these days. It also introduces a very unique "origin story" of an entire fantasy race - the goblins. The overall design has a certain something I last encountered in Thief: Deadly Shadows (which is a huge bonus for me, being a diehard TDS fan) while doing many things even better (understandable - came after). Plus, a goblin inhabiting the Raymond Chandler voice is something to behold. It plays great, runs smooth, looks decent, sounds better than expected, and entertains phenomenally. 10/10 - and I will definitely play repeatedly just for the fun of it. P.S.: Direct reply to a dude down the aisle of reviews: If you think an enemy has somehow seen you across the whole map, I have a Styx quote for you right here: "To be skilled or not to be skilled, that is the question. And "F*** You" is the answer." And another one: "You realize that using the controller with your feet is not gonna gain you an achievement, right?"

"Always keep to the shadows...and walk where it doesn't make too much noise... Avoid running...and farting." Styx: Master of Shadows is a stealth video game developed by Cyanide Studios and published by Focus Home Interactive. Story Styx: Master of Shadows takes place in a dark fantasy setting, with humans, elves, orcs, magic and all those common fantasy tropes packed together. You step into the shoes of titular character - Styx, a 200 years old goblin who infiltrates the Tower of Akenash, flying fortress with magical World Tree that keeps whole tower afloat. Styx has one simple goal: reaching the heart of the World Tree. Gameplay Master of Shadows is played from third person perspective, and as you can guess from title and genre it is all about stealth- silently avoiding and/or eliminating enemies while utilizing your tools to progress through halls and corridors of Akenash in one ugly but intact piece. Game is sliced into chapters, with each cut into multiple zones. In each zone you have to complete a task or series of them, varying from basic making way through a zone to theft and assasination. Simple and straight-forward, even if your path to said goals won't be thanks to levels providing often more than one way of approach. Don't worry, it ain't Styx first rodeo with 2 centuries of experience on the back and our sneaky-stabby goblin is perfect for the difficulties ahead. Thanks to his small size he can effectively utilize environment around him, whether through hiding to avoid detection or by silently crawling through tight spaces to avoid and surprise guard patrols. Styx can jump and climb on objects allowing him to maneuver vertically quite well, while horizontally option to take cover behind objects makes him harder to detect. On his path our sneaky goblin will have to be careful about locked doors needing bit more extra time to open, pesky furniture causing noise, sources of light and multiple types of enemies inside of Akenash, all eager to turn him into green paste. If you want to make some breathing room you can sneak behind a guard and take him down with trusty dagger. Styx doesn't have "non-lethal" in his dictionary so you either serve quick, painful and loud death or slower yet quieter way to keep your presence unnoticed. One of the unique aspects of Styx is his connection with amber- golden, sticky sap that flows through the roots and branches of the World Tree, granting him certain abilities. Our hero can create clones of himself that help him on his adventure in many ways, and if such need occurs he can waste a significant amount of amber to turn invisible for a short period of time, while amber vision allows to scan environment for useful objects. Additionally Styx has set of tools that can help him on top of his "magical" abilities. Balls of sand to extinguish torches from a distance, throwing knives to eliminate (or distract) nearest threat, vials to refill health or amber. If you alert enemies, you can fight or run! Combat is quite straight forward. A duel between you and closest opponent where you parry attacks until you open up a window to strike back. Both combat and exploration can cause you to die, resulting in sending you back to lastest checkpoint/manual save. At the end of whole chapter you get skill points for all objectives done and unlocked Insygnias- challenges given at every mission related to stealth, time, and collectibles. Skill Points are spend at a hideout, hub area in between chapters where you can restock supplies and invest points to unlock new skills or improve already owned! Playtime and replayability It took me very solid 18 hours to complete the game for the first time. After you beat the story you are free to replay previous missions for Insygnias (or fun) so there is some replay value in the game. Impressions Right from the start to the very finish, Master of Shadows sets one thing straight: it's a game focused on pure, full-on stealth. That gets quickly clarified mainly by awful combat it provides. Some people claim it's bad on purpose to fully force player into leaning towards stealth and rethink their straight-forward approach, some will say it's because it's simply bad. I ain't picking sides here, I'm just saying that dueling combat game has going on is a disaster, very unenjoyable, stiff, and if you are fighting against more than one enemy you are automatically screwed. On top of that plenty of enemies are actually unbeatable, eliminating you in one automatic hit or using ranged attacks to quickly dispose you so combat feels as an addition that simply has to exist for obvious self-defence reasons. Doesn't matter much because you will be lurking around the shadows and stealthy making your way through whole game anyway! Here is where Styx earns his title, fully rightful, and where game is pretty decent. Simple foundations you will find in every stealth game, mashed with tool utilization on top of clever level design make traveling through flying fortress an enjoyable, sneaky trip. Game is a fair challenge where using your tools, careful planning and ton of quick saving/loading feels great! Styx is one cheeky likeable bastard, while surprise coming in form of story twist and second half of narrative was unexpected in a positive way. Side tasks were fun to complete and simple upgrade system with Insygnias gives you a good reason to replay chapters after you are done. Of course because it's a smaller budget AA game, it has that certain "jank" in it, from awkward movement controls in tight spaces to rather mediocre visuals, but ultimately I had enjoyable time with the game, and if you are a fan of stealth genre you should give this game a shot. Final words and conclusion This game is apparently a prequel to lesser known title "Of Orcs And Men" that features our sneaky goblin, so for more Styx you should check it out! Sneak and stab around Akenash as one stealthy goblin, as Styx: Master of Shadows delivers solid pure stealth experience under messy combat and clunky controls. I feel really bad for skipping this game on release. Randomly got it on sale, decided to play it one day, and got hooked. It's a small indie title, but it has such a great charm to it that I ended up craving for more after completing the first game. Styx seems like a very bland, generic character at first glance, but his story and personality are pretty intriguing and I've never seen a character with a similar backstory. Currently playing the second game and can't wait for the third installment!

It's a pretty fun stealth-game. Kind of feels half-baked sometimes, but i think the devs made the most of the budget the probably had. Has quite-good replay value too.
