July 2025
Reviewing (mostly) every game (or DLC) in my library, part 212: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️☆☆ (8/10) If Her Story and Lovecraft had a weird little FMV baby, it’d probably look a lot like The Infectious Madness of Doctor Dekker. You’re a psychiatrist trying to unravel the mysterious death of your predecessor—and in doing so, you meet a parade of extremely unwell patients who might be victims, suspects… or something much stranger. This is an ambitious, experimental FMV murder mystery that embraces the uncanny. It's eerie, thoughtful, occasionally awkward, but consistently compelling—if you’re patient enough to wade through its quirks. 🖋️ Pros: [*] Truly strange, unforgettable characters. You meet a cast of patients, each with a surreal psychological condition that flirts with the supernatural: time loops, reality shifts, shadow people. Every session feels like peeling back layers of psychological horror, one cryptic confession at a time. Some characters are unsettling, some tragic—and all of them linger long after the credits roll. [*] Lovecraftian vibes without the usual clichés. Instead of tentacles and cults, this game leans into existential dread, madness, and the unreliability of perception. You’re never sure what’s real—whether the patients are delusional, genuinely cursed, or if you’re the one losing your grip. It’s subtle and unsettling. [*] FMV performances are surprisingly solid. The actors give it their all. A few are campy, but most performances strike the right balance between theatrical and grounded. Watching the actors closely—how they fidget, how they react to your questions—becomes part of the gameplay. [*] Type-your-own-question format makes you feel like a real doctor/detective. Instead of picking from a menu, you write your questions. This makes your investigation feel more immersive and organic. When it works, it’s fantastic—you feel clever, like you cracked the code behind someone’s cryptic ramblings. [*] Atmosphere is top-notch. The grainy visuals, soft lighting, and eerie sound design all reinforce the game’s tense, claustrophobic mood. There’s something hypnotic about sitting in the same dimly lit office for hours, asking people if they believe in gods or time travel while rain patters outside. [*] Multiple endings and branching dialogue. Your choices—and how much you probe—determine the outcome. Will you unmask the killer? Lose your sanity? Save a patient, or ruin their life? There’s real replay value here, especially if you're interested in seeing how far you can push your role as doctor. 🕯️ Cons: [*] The text parser is hit-or-miss. While the open-ended question system is ambitious, it can also be frustrating. Ask something slightly wrong and the game might not recognize it. You’ll find yourself rephrasing the same question four different ways to trigger a response. It kills momentum and sometimes feels like you’re fighting the interface instead of solving a mystery. [*] Pacing can be slow and repetitive. You’re interviewing multiple people, one by one, across several in-game days. With limited locations and little visual variety, the game can feel static. If you don’t vibe with the format, it’ll start to feel like a grind. [*] Some answers feel like red herrings or filler. Because of the parser system, there’s a lot of trial and error. You’ll sometimes trigger the same response repeatedly, or get vague answers that don’t move the story forward. It can be hard to tell if you're missing something meaningful or just need the right keyword. [*] You may need a guide to finish. Especially for achievement hunters or players trying to "solve" every subplot. It’s easy to miss key questions or clues due to the freeform input style. If you want a smooth experience, a walkthrough can be your best friend. [*] The ending (or "who did it") isn’t the game’s strongest point. While the journey is full of creepy twists and juicy character work, the mystery’s resolution can feel a little… flat. Don’t expect a massive, shocking payoff. This is more about mood and ambiguity than closure.

The Infectious Madness of Doctor Dekker : At first I wasn't into it, but the more question you asked the more interesting it get. I have done only two playthrough so far but I'm already thinking of doing a 3rd one. The murderer is chosen randomly at the start of the game. During my first playthrough I was very close from finding the murderer. My first choice was Elin, since she's a nurse it's easy for her to get medicine. She also baked some cookies with medicinal ''herbs'' and it's easy for her to switch to someone else, so I thought maybe she can easily switch to Jaya and kill doctor Dekker but it wasn't her. My 2nd choice was Jaya it's very easy to access anything from the doctor when you are his assistant, also she keeps talking about Psychokinesis and pushing the blame on Marianna so for me it was getting more and more obvious and in my first playthough it was Jaya. The 2nd one I had Marianna. I can't wait for The Infectious Madness of Doctor Dekker 2.

This FMV novel is the most enigmatic experience I've ever had. It’s incredibly gripping and continuously leaves you questioning everything: Who is the killer? Do your patients possess mysterious powers? Or are we the crazy ones? The performances are superb, and with a sequel scheduled for 2025, I'm really looking forward to playing more games from this developer in the near future.

The Infectious Madness of Doctor Dekker is a solid detective game with many possible outcomes. I primarily bought this game because I am a therapist and I love detective games so I felt that it was a nice blend of my career and my interests. I'm always leery of FMV games, but this is very well done. Dr. Dekker doesn't struggle with phrasing and will give the player a lot of leeway with how you ask questions. You can even be playful with it. At one point I decided to quote a scene from the Big Lebowski and I had some pretty comical results. "Do you see what happens, Larry? Do you see what happens when you..." The bottom line here, you will get a lot of replay value and the characters, while as a counselor I find them insufferable (Jaya), as a gamer I find them fun to explore. The achievements can be tedious so if you're an achievement hunter, beware. The story is solid and the game is a nice spin on detective games. I'd give this a 3.5/5 in total.

I had so much fun with this game! It did take me a little bit to kinda get my bearings and figure out how to get the conversation flowing naturally, but once I did that I was all in, and found it pretty immersive and engrossing. Loved the characters, the acting, and the stories, and my god were some moments unsettling! Totally reccommend it if this seems like your thing!
