I’ve noticed a lot of the negative reviews from new players seem to come from a mismatch in expectations. Once you understand what *The Scroll of Taiwu* is actually trying to be, many of those concerns become a lot less severe. This is not really a “main character” RPG. Your starting character is not *the* protagonist. The focus is your lineage, your sect, and the long-term legacy you build over time. The monthly save system can definitely feel frustrating at first, especially when you think you’ve lost progress, but it makes more sense once you realize the game is built around continuation rather than one perfect character run. I’m new to Wuxia-style games, and the Chinese gaming scene is still pretty new to me, so there has been some culture shock. I’ve restarted a few times because certain mechanics were unclear, and I do think the game could explain some systems better. That criticism is fair. That said, the in-game lookup tool, community guides, and Discord have been extremely helpful. Once it clicks that this is more about managing your lineage and martial clan’s future than protecting your first character forever, it becomes a deeply rewarding experience. **TL;DR:** Great game, but a lot of the frustration comes from misconceptions about what type of experience it is. It’s not a main-character RPG; it’s about lineage, legacy, and building your martial clan over time. Some mechanics are confusing, and that criticism is understandable, but putting a little effort into learning what you don’t understand makes the game much better.
If you're struggling to find the translation (as it starts in chinese), either click the dropdown box in the top left (marked by an icon with a circle) or select the third box down in the menu to access settings and change it in the dropdown there. With the official english translation the game is more accessible than ever, but english speakers will likely still run into a bit of cross-cultural barrier as far as the actual contents of the text still. There is however very little like Scroll of Taiwu that's accessible to an english audience, so if you're willing to bear with the confusion of stepping into Wuxia/Xianxia stuff, I fully recommend it, as it's worth the time and is quite deep with a lot of moving systems. It is still a very complex game, so you will need to be patient, do the tutorial/look up information like you would stepping into a game like Crusader Kings for the first time. There's a couple pieces that they seem to have missed in the translation, but nothing that impedes understanding so far.
FOR THOSE ARGUING "NO ENGLISH IN-GAME, NEEDS TO EDIT STEAM PAGE!". You guys are a 1-2 days early. This game will officially release version 1 (out of early access) in 06/17/2026. They have prepped things for the release, so just wait. If you can't, there's still an English mod for this game that you can use. Thanks! p.s. : Grinding for cuteness (/// ▲ //)~
Where to begin....... I've played this game for 1700 hours and I'll likely play it for 10,000 more. I've played this game since the characters were jank and looked like they were drawn by 10 year olds. I've played this game since before the moves had animations and you had to imagine what the attack effects would look like. I've played this game since the dark ages. My childrens children will likely play this game. With all that said, if you love Wuxia sims, this is THE game to play. THAT BEING SAID: the following is also true..... The game was made primarily for the chinese audience, therefore there's no official english translation. The devs have been saying the English translation is coming, however the release has a history of getting pushed back. The English Mod DOES exist and it's come a LONG way through the efforts of Li Wei and the gang of the discord. That being said, it's still very much imperfect. A small unofficial (unpaid) mod team with personal lives can only do so much. IF the current English Mod is too abrasive for you, you will not like this game. If you can accept the English Mod as it is, this is objectively one of THE BEST GAMES OUT PERIOD. I would pay $60 for this game. Let alone $20. I have games that I've paid more for that give SIGNIFICANTLY less content than this game does. Not to mention, despite their flaws, the devs do constantly update and upgrade the game. You can tell the game itself is a labor of love. They want to build something fun, even if some understandably don't agree with how they're building it.
