Surge 2 is a good game, no doubt about it, just not so good as the first one. I like new parry system, weapon and enemy variety, world building and how city changes through the story. I don't like story at all, some basic garbage about saving a girl and you play as a big nobody who don't have any personality. NPCs are awfully stupid, just talking puppets, the only one interesting character is Warren from first game. First half of the game was too boring, level design and city layout are very confusing but when you got all tools/shortcuts to traverse the locations it's becoming alright. Combat kinda lost a little bit of weight but became very aggressive and fast. Bosses are serious lacklaster, there are some decent encounters but others are reskins of basic enemy types. Overall it was a very fun experience, just with some bad game design decisions.

A fine souls-like. Definitely not as challenging as any of the from soft games, but can still pose a fun challenge. Devs did improve on the formula of the original game, like remove the bullsh*t weapon proficiency stat, introduce new weapon types. But what was a definite downgrade for me, its the main character him self. In the first game Warren (your character) had a personality, a voice, something you can connect to. In this game you get none of that but what you can do is to customize the appearance of you character, something i could not care less about. By the end of the game i have completely forgotten how my character looks underneath all that armor. Overall a great game, would recommend for any souls-like enjoyer.

barely worth recommending, 5-6/10 good: - regular combat - some of the weapons- especially fast ones - map design, little shortcuts you can explore mid: - bosses- most of the time its just a guy with weird attack patterns, there is only 1 boss i would consider to be really good (and hard) and its in mid game, late game bosses (including last boss) are a joke - implant system- cool idea, at first it made some sense to me, but not for long - more below - parring- cool idea, but imo its garbage, you can evade/roll really fast and far in this game, parring requires more skill and all you get for that is a stagger sometimes - story was kinda ok for most of the game, but after "point of no return" it all went downhill - upgrade system- didn't read any tutorials, after 12h of the game i figured out you have to do finishers to get upgrade parts, its my bad i didn't care but i don't like upgradable armor like in dark souls 2 - leveling system- why even bother with these 3 stats, when you need stamina no matter your build, and HP i always good, energy only worth another battery - some areas are used multiple times, with very little changes in between, me not likey - drone system, honestly couldn't care less about it, for most of the game used only EMP one, on the hardest boss in the game used grenades and other s-hit just to get it done bad: - implants continuation- late in story game just drops better implants, and not like "might be better for this or that playstyle" - just better ones, passives that you can always use, for example: after 5 hits in quick succession you get 10% heal- and im not even gonna start on "prevents death" implants :/ - slow weapons- in this game imo they are worthless, maybe you can slowly get some damage in, but why would you even try if you can just get fast weapon - weapon drops- for some reason game drops you weapons regularly, most of the time the new weapon is better AND upgraded to suit your current location enemies, i played 3/4 of the game just equipping new weapons every time i got one - weapon upgrades- this isn't like in dark souls- there are BETTER and WORSE weapons, i tried upgrading starting punching gloves type weapon to +9 and it was garbage compared to gloves i got late in the game- why even bother with so many weapons if most of them are dogs-hit - game difficulty - the game is at it's hardest in the 4-12 hours mark, not even in the middle- after that it's smooth sailing, you've seen and survived all extremely fast patters on some bosses and regular enemies, it won't get any faster - game performance - oh boy it was the first time i had to use resolution scaling on steam deck, for some reason this 5 year old game on minimal settings STILL couldn't manage 60 fps, its worse than elden ring (while looking OK at best) - the map game displays you each time you load new area, you can also see it in game (also affected by resolution scaling, i couldn't see s-hit :) ) - hard to read, doesn't show you how big locations are (maybe on purpose, but come one) - "fast travel" they put in last few hours of the game- wow you can teleport to a few locations (that you need to find, explore once again locations you explored at least 2 times before) - enemies launching whole map to get you, in their >1 tonne exo suit, just have to learn their patters - reuse of enemies, after ~14h you've seen all game has to offer, lots of enemies reuse, with a slight twist

This game is like a love letter to bloodborne. It ditches the more defensive playstyle of Dark souls / Elden Ring for a much more aggressive trading blows approach to combat. And for someone like me who didnt really click with Elden Ring this game gets combat right. Hits are punchy, with a lot of weight and impact (more or less depending on your chosen weapon) It also utilizes a directional parry system which seems odd at first (imagine for honor) but is absolutely addicting once you get the hang of it. Exploration is very well done in this game at first you might think the map to be rather small but theres so many layers, little corners and a lot of verticality that you can easily spend up to 7 hours before doing anything main quest relevant while also frequently providing the satisfaction of a new shortcut, a side quest or similar. The way you gain new armor is also a very big factor that kept me from always looking forward to seeing more, as someone whos only in it for the fashion the armor system can be a bit frustrating because everything is based around building "sets" for thier respective 3 piece and 6 piece set bonusses. Although i ended up just rocking a set of armor which i just picked for looks for a good portion of my playthrough i was very happy that towards the end i ended up mixing 2 3 set bonusses together for a fun electricity based build. The finishers where still fun and i only saw a tiny amount of them (theres 1 for each targeted limb, for each weapon type so its a lot) All in all without rambling on too much i hope someone reading this can tell is that i thoroughly enjoyed my time with the game and i dont wanna spend too much time gloating about all the aspects i like about it. If youre a fan of a quick semi gritty action rpg with meaty combat give this one a go. i did 54 times in my roughly 41 hours with the game with only one boss requiring more than 1 to 2 tries so dont worry too much about the difficulty ( i didnt even put a lot of points into HP and ony started to get two shotted by 1 enemy with a very specific attack towards the end ) If youre looking for punishment like Nioh this isnt for you but if you just wanna vibe, have a good time while playing some bloodborne light, have at it. Its definetely worth a good 20 bucks (imo everything up to 35 would be a good bargain still) Dont bother with the Dlcs though, apparently they are either completely unnecesarry cash grabs or not that great (the story dlc from what i read)

I'm going to preface this review by saying I absolutely hated The Surge 1, the moment to moment gameplay and combat in that game felt terrible due to being locked in often seconds long multi-hit animations you can't cancel/have little control over, and with difficulty so high it's easy to call it unfair due to even basic enemies dishing out so much more damage than you can and always getting ganked by three or more enemies. That said it was also a game with really interesting and cool systems like the implants, limb targeting, severing and gear crafting - all of those good things completely strangled by the terrible combat. However The Surge 2 does a complete 180 compared to the first game; it took what did work and made the gameplay so much tighter, responsive and chunky while being incredibly fun. The difficulty has been toned way down and in doing so turning The Surge 2 into an more casual friendly Souls-Like game and it's all the better for it in my opinion, because it feels much fairer and the only times I died is when I'm playing like an idiot and not managing my resources properly. And it does all of that while keeping every single great system in the first Surge game intact and even expanding on those aspects. It is just a much better game on almost every single level, however I stress almost as there are some things that disappointed me. As usual I break things down. Pros: - Chunky combat with unique limb targeting and severing mechanic for gear and upgrades - The improved multi-directional parry system is a joy to learn, even if it is really tough to master - Implants and gear crafting mechanics make a return and are just as great - Battery and resource management is a gigantic step up from the first game - Vastly improved level design, with a world that's constantly shifting with new enemy spawns and routes as you progress the story as well as further additions in new game plus - Expanded metroidvania elements, with new tools to traverse the world in more interesting ways - Great soundtrack, huge improvement over the first game's OST - Some fantastic boss fights - Status effects adds tons more depth to the combat - The Kraken DLC is also fantastic, by far the best content in the game - Much easier than most other Souls-like games, which is a gigantic improvement over the absurd difficulty spikes in the first game - Takes itself less seriously than the first game, with plenty of fun jokes and references Cons: - Some disappointing bosses, with multiple repeats and not enough big machine type bosses like Little Johnny - Less enemy variety than the first game, mostly blokes in exosuits and not enough robots and ranged enemies - No map you can use at any time, making it really easy to got lost - Nano status effect is far too common, extremely deadly and too many enemies are immune to it while other status effects are much rarer - May be too easy for players looking for a challenge I was honestly shocked at how much I ended up liking The Surge 2, I did try going into it as unbiased as possible but my disdain for the first game came through a lot in the early hours of the game, but pushing on through it managed to turn my frown upside down and won me over by being a gigantic improvement in almost every conceivable way and just being a really fun game on its own. While it's not among my favourites in the genre, it is a really good time and I definitely look forward to playing more in the future.
