For a game made by one guy, shout out to Nikita, this game is absolutely SICK. I hope and pray that we see the rest of this game fleshed out as what we have now in this first level is amazing. The Music, level Design/environmental design, combat, and overall style of this game is great. It's also crazy to me that there is more build options in this game than even some AAA titles. I played around with Ice, Fire, Poison, and "Temp" HP builds. But as a Disclaimer to those who are looking to buy/play this game. Know that it's basically just the first zone that is fully fleshed out at this time. Although the first zone is a solid 10/10 at base difficulty It was only roughly about 4 hours of game time for me. That being said you can raise the mob density and difficulty for "Subsequent" playthroughs of the first zone as well as to challenge yourself if you wanted to do that. There is a second zone but you can clearly tell, especially compared to the first zone, that the second is still a work in progress. Currently beyond the tutorial there is 4? bosses? And one Gauntlet styled boss fight (Which was hell and took me like 40 mins to beat) Even with that in mind I can still recommend buying/playing what is currently available. Especially if you are a doom/souls fan.

Very fun, satisfying, and surprisingly, polished game. The loading times are great! It is really quick to jump into. The best part is that the game saves your progress when you quit. If you were in the middle of a run, you can quit, and later jump straight back in. This makes the game very accessible, and friendly for people with little time. The travel system and movement is also very fast; travelling back to where you died is actually fun, not a slog like in some other games.

Beware, VOIN is very much early in early access. First thing first, combat is utterly excellent and some of, if not the best, first-person melee combat ever. But... After 24 hours of play, I just can't play this anymore. There are only two levels, most weapons are flavours of sword and overall there aren't that many weapons in total, items are mostly buffs and abilities and overall there aren't that many items with various buffs and abilities in total. I mean, compared to any finished game, VOIN is lacking considerably. I enjoyed my time with VOIN immensely, but after 24 hours of play, I'm just kind of sick of it. It needs more stuff. And I suspect it'll take the solo developer a considerable amount of time to flesh this game out. For now, I'm done with VOIN and will remain so for what I'd wager will probably be somewhere between six to twelve months. Would I recommend it? Yes, with the caveat that you are receiving very little as of writing. But as long as you're okay with that, it's worth the price of admission.

[Updated 1/1/2025] I'm about to be a bit critical, so I'd like to open by saying that I'm recommending this game because it draws inspiration from other games in all the right ways, and is clearly being made with love. This is such an interesting concept, the weapons are really interesting and fun to use, the upgrade system with the bells and stuff is really cool, there's a tonn of immersive polish helping the overall feel of the game, and the general lore gives me a lot of hope for the content that's to come! - To add to this, I've found increasing the toughness and amount of the enemies to be extremely useful, and borderline essential to this game. Definitely play with it as you go if you find that you're too OP! So at about 3 hours into this game, I saw essentially all the content that exists. For a $20 game, that may be a little steep to some, the stupid dollar-an-hour rule wouldn't add up without some serious grinding. So keep that in mind, you'll maybe get 4-10 hours of enjoyment out of this game in its current state, and as with all early-access, you're making a bit of an investment. That being said, I'll probably play this game for longer since the grind has been really fun, since the combat is so epic - so your mileage may vary! Some general feedback/gripes so far: - Sometimes the summoner enemies fail to summon guys, or summon them out of bounds, and then none of them summon anything until you fully close/reopen the game. - Exploration has been cool, but not very rewarding. Climbing tall structures generally doesn't offer any chests, or unique/interesting items. Replaying existing areas doesn't offer any more incentive to explore. - I was really confused in world 2 when I climbed to the top of a tower with a big beacon of light, just to enter a dungeon and immediately leave it? I really hope there's an epic fight planned for this place at some point! Overall the environment looks great though and has lots of interesting nooks and crannies! - There's a lot of stuff in this game that's unintuitive, the main things being: - Item symbiosis - I've been unable to perform this process despite filling the specified conditions (2 fully satiated weapons), and I don't feel like it's clear enough in-game what I even need to do here? - Item lore text - A term glossary feels pretty needed when the lore is this deep and unexplained. I'm sure it will come in time, but right now these terms mean nothing to me, and I have no easy way to learn them. - World objective(s) - If you wander too far, you're warped back into the world being told 'that ain't where the action is' but like, okay, where is the action? why am I here? - How to unlock new powers - I've played for 8 hours and beaten both bosses and still don't have the second row unlocked. - Leveling up - What it actually does other than increase damage? If it only increases damage by a flat rate, I really wish it'd do something cooler. There's a lot of really interesting stuff here though, and I look forward to seeing the content to come! That being said, the first major update will be a great look at the future of this game, and I'll definitely come back to update this review once its out.
