Played the game during an emotional, confusing, and depressing time, and got personally invested in the story. To put it simply, the story is about MC going through a failed relationship, career, and other stuff - though my situation wasn't about an old flame or anything - some of the hardships they encountered hit close to home past and present. Honestly, I do not know what else I can say because these type of stories might not be for everyone, but at the time I played it, it was a good story for me. Playstyle is very similar to the "To the Moon". The choices you make, how you spend your time affect the outcome -or rather how easy or hard you get there, because at the end you don't have MANY choices and although you have an option to end your story one way or the other, one of them is like the true/correct choice. Considering the game is like a dollar during the sales, it's worth its price.

Always Sometimes Monsters is one of those rare narrative-driven games that makes you stop and think about the choices you make—not just in the game, but in life. 🎭 Story & Choices - The game thrives on its branching narrative. Every decision feels weighty, shaping your character’s journey in meaningful ways. - It’s not about winning or losing—it’s about living through the consequences of your choices, whether they’re hopeful, heartbreaking, or somewhere in between. - The writing is sharp and grounded, tackling themes of love, ambition, morality, and survival with sincerity. 🎮 Gameplay & Immersion - The mechanics are simple, but that’s intentional—it keeps the focus on the story and the emotional impact of your decisions. - The variety of paths and endings makes replaying worthwhile, as no two playthroughs feel the same. 💡 Why It Stands Out - Few games capture the complexity of everyday struggles as authentically as this one. - It’s a reminder that sometimes the smallest choices can lead to the biggest consequences. ✨ Final Thoughts If you enjoy narrative-heavy experiences where your decisions truly matter, Always Sometimes Monsters is a must-play. It’s heartfelt, thought-provoking, and unforgettable—perfect for players who want a story that challenges them as much as it entertains.

I played this game 11 years ago. I still remember it to this day. Just looking at my achievements was enough to jog my memory about how damn depressing this game was and how much anyone who is hung up on an old flame needs to play it. This was indie art before indie art became a thing.

Well, I love this game. First of all, I mean hello, the name. I practically bought this game just from the name alone. Don't give me any of that "what does it even mean" BS, the name is perfect. (Also, it clearly probably means we'll always have times when we're monsters) As for the game itself, the world is expansive and the story is deep. There's a lot going on, and it's usually all bad, but that's good, narratively. You have lots of opportunities to make bad choices. It's rough and gritty and immersive, and you can't not be a monster. You can be less of a monster, but the past is already set in stone. There's theoretically a "good" and "bad" ending, but really, they're both bad endings. I mean, they're good narratively, just bad for the characters. In a dog-eat-dog world, you either eat your friends or get eaten by your friends, I guess. Anyway, I basically love everything about the game. You can choose your character. The party scene at the beginning is a character selection screen, which I didn't realize, but I was happy with my character. What you sign the card with is your name for the whole game, so be ready to commit to it. I like the insert of the dev characters. That's how you do fourth wall/meta stuff well. I appreciate the Canadian political references, and no, I don't mean the one everyone will obviously get. Also, make sure to go fishing, like damn.

This is a fun little game that I enjoy coming back to every now and then to see what different outcomes I can achieve. Nothing in it is too complicated, and the story is fairly straightforward and, at times, humorous and emotional. The writers don't hold back on offering the player the chance to determine their own morality and that of the characters with whom they interact throughout the game. There are very few decisions in this game that don't carry some kind of sacrifice or weight behind them, yet the gameplay itself isn't too demanding or complicated. Because of this, you can play the game for a bit, walk away, do something else for any amount of time, come back, and know exactly where you are, what you're doing, and where you'll go from there. The multiple important options and events also encourage you to play it as many times as you want to see how your decisions and ending are impacted.
