I held off on this game for some time because the reviews seemed mixed. That was a mistake. This game is wonderful. I'm sure it's not for everyone, but then again no game is. This one though? It was made for me. First off the game is beautiful. I am in love with the various environments. The colors and lighting look amazing, both on my PC and steam deck. Admittedly, the game really shines in 4k. The combat is souls-lite, in that you have a stamina bar so you can't swing wildly, you have dodge roll and can parry with a shield, or you can wield spells. There are several classes to choose from at the start, but you do eventually get to build a multiclass thing.. I'm not there yet. I find the combat really good. Some of the bosses have been tough... I have had to try a couple times, and that's only a few hours into the game. You do have a corpse run, but I've found that the save shrines are reasonably well put. You never really feel too, too far from one. A bit further sometimes that I would like but not so bad that it ever really bothered me. Close enough to boss rooms that you may have a few things to swing at on your way back, but nothing too difficult. This is first and foremost a combat game. Very little actual platforming, and certainly no advanced traversal. This is a side scrolling combat rpg. And that brings me to where this game really shines for me... this isn't your average Metroidvania, this is a full fledged RPG. Everything from side quests, bounty board, and idle chat in the towns... it feels like a full on mainstream RPG, but just from the side. I love that. The story is engrossing and dripping with theme, and some of the environments are just fantastic. As I said above, this is souls-lite, not souls-like... this isn't Grime (which I love) or Salt & Sanctuary (which I loathe). It's definitely meant for you to not button mash, but as long as you can control your urges then this game isn't so hard that you cannot progress. As you level up you build out your little camp by the Witch Tree and get access to vendors, crafting items, etc. All fairly standard fare... for an rpg. First time I've seen it this deep though in a Metroidvania. And make no mistake... this is a Metroidvania in the sense that you have a full Metroidvania map, there are ability and item gated pathways you will need to backtrack to, etc. Fast travel is from shrine to shrine. Anyway I am so glad I've finally tried this one out... this is a good example of why sometimes I need to stop paying such close attention to steam reviews. I'm absolutely loving this game. It's the right level of challenge for me and has all of the theme, color, story, and ambiance that I really need to have in a game. Looking forward to more of it!

Yes! If you are hesitating during this winter sale, here is what to expect: This game is the first Golden Axe with a huge bestiary, beautiful visuals, and a roguelite metroidvania core. You can even kick goblins to death before they escape and collect all their treasure, like in Golden Axe. You will need to grind a little. Revisit areas and fight enemies that respawn when you activate a checkpoint to earn more gold or gain experience to take down bosses. Character building is deep and rewarding. Hidden passages often hide valuable treasures, so keep your eyes open. The demo only hide elements of the visited area. The full game comes with more for that same area. If you were scared by the boss difficulty in the demo, fear no more. The complete game allows deeper exploration, which lets you come back stronger and get rid of it quickly. Replayability is high because you can try completely different characters with different stats and tactics. I am only height hours in, but I am hooked. The game is really fun. The only minor issues are some cheeky NPC comments and a few clunky bestiary entries, but the NPCs are still amusing and the monsters cool to fight. One thing to note if you play the demo: your save will not be used once you acquire the full game. You will have to fresh start.

This game is nice and very fun. A Metroidvania focused on exploration and character customization. The graphic is very nice (it reminded me of the various Trine games) and the story, although well defined, is mostly a trail that pushes you to explore the huge game world. There are 6 classes, but at level 25 you gain the ability to take skills from other class trees. This combined with there is no level cap makes the combinations practically infinite, however, I suggest staying focused on just one tree until you unlock the ability to respec your character... The real game begins only after defeating the first boss (the necromancer), unlocking the grappling hook and the ability to respec your character. Anyway there is a free, playable demo that allows you to try the game, it was very useful for me because I bought the game only after trying it. Many of the negative reviews and criticisms found online refer to older versions of the game because I haven't found a single one of the reported defects so far. So what better way to clear up any doubts than to download the demo and try it out? :)

This game should be better than it is, but its not. It has all the trappings of something that could be great but in every aspect possible, it falls short of that potential. Its fine. The game is fine. If you can catch it on a good sale, its worth picking up and checking out. But I just can't recommend it at full price.

After 35 hours of gameplay, completing every main quest, side quest, bounty, and exploring all areas, including hidden ones, and defeating every boss, I can confidently say this game is one of the best metroidvania/souls-like games I’ve ever played. Despite a few flaws, its strengths make it a must-play, and I highly recommend it, even though New Game+ (NG+) is not yet implemented (the developers are working on it). The Negatives Let’s address the shortcomings first to clear the way for the game’s brilliance: Timed Doors: Early in the game, you encounter timed doors activated by levers, requiring a quick dash to pass through. These are overly simplistic and only appear early on, feeling like a pointless inclusion. Entropy Rift Levels: While I understand their narrative purpose, the entropy rifts introduce awkward platforming, vanishing platforms, and one particularly grueling rift with tough enemies. These sections feel jarring and more like a chore than an engaging adventure. Mana Flask System: As a spellcaster, the absence of refillable mana flasks (like the healing flasks) is frustrating. Relying on purchased or crafted mana flasks, especially when low on gold or resources, forces unnecessary grinding to maintain spell usage. Crafting System: The crafting mechanics, inspired by MMO-style resource gathering, feel clunky and out of place in a metroidvania game like this one. Final Boss Phase 2: The second phase of the final boss is excessively punishing, bordering on unfair. I personally think it is PURE BS. Perhaps get rid of the platforming, or the need to sustain Mandragora. Getting rid of either, not both, would make the second phase actually challenging and enjoyable. The Positives Despite these issues, Mandragora shines brightly in nearly every other aspect: Stunning Art Direction: The game’s 2.5D world is breathtaking, blending 2D visuals with subtle 3D depth to create a captivating atmosphere. Exceptional Level Design: The non-linear level design is well crafted, with clear pathways, logical shortcuts, and rewarding exploration. Diverse Enemy Variety: Claims of repetitive enemies are unfounded. Each major and sub-area introduces unique foes, and the bestiary showcases an impressive range of designs. Engaging Boss Fights: Most bosses are a delight, offering varied difficulty and creative mechanics. While some are reused, the unique bosses are well designed (except for the final boss’ second phase). Outstanding Soundtrack: The OST, particularly the choral Prelude theme, is phenomenal and worthy of any music playlist. Robust Skill Tree: The expansive skill tree offers countless build options. While newcomers should focus on a single path to avoid diluting their abilities, the spells and skills are diverse, fun, and feel impactful. Seamless Fast Travel: The ability to teleport to any checkpoint directly from the map, anytime, not just at checkpoints, is a game changer. Unlike games like Blasphemous, which suffer from tedious backtracking, Mandragora respects your time, akin to Elden Ring’s fast-travel system. Final Verdict Mandragora: Whispers of the Witch Tree is a top-tier metroidvania/souls-like that excels in art, level design, and gameplay depth. With planned updates like NG+ and potential quality-of-life improvements, it’s already a standout title. Despite minor missteps, this game is absolutely worth your time and investment. Highly recommended!
