I held off on this game for some time because the reviews seemed mixed. That was a mistake. This game is wonderful. I'm sure it's not for everyone, but then again no game is. This one though? It was made for me. First off the game is beautiful. I am in love with the various environments. The colors and lighting look amazing, both on my PC and steam deck. Admittedly, the game really shines in 4k. The combat is souls-lite, in that you have a stamina bar so you can't swing wildly, you have dodge roll and can parry with a shield, or you can wield spells. There are several classes to choose from at the start, but you do eventually get to build a multiclass thing.. I'm not there yet. I find the combat really good. Some of the bosses have been tough... I have had to try a couple times, and that's only a few hours into the game. You do have a corpse run, but I've found that the save shrines are reasonably well put. You never really feel too, too far from one. A bit further sometimes that I would like but not so bad that it ever really bothered me. Close enough to boss rooms that you may have a few things to swing at on your way back, but nothing too difficult. This is first and foremost a combat game. Very little actual platforming, and certainly no advanced traversal. This is a side scrolling combat rpg. And that brings me to where this game really shines for me... this isn't your average Metroidvania, this is a full fledged RPG. Everything from side quests, bounty board, and idle chat in the towns... it feels like a full on mainstream RPG, but just from the side. I love that. The story is engrossing and dripping with theme, and some of the environments are just fantastic. As I said above, this is souls-lite, not souls-like... this isn't Grime (which I love) or Salt & Sanctuary (which I loathe). It's definitely meant for you to not button mash, but as long as you can control your urges then this game isn't so hard that you cannot progress. As you level up you build out your little camp by the Witch Tree and get access to vendors, crafting items, etc. All fairly standard fare... for an rpg. First time I've seen it this deep though in a Metroidvania. And make no mistake... this is a Metroidvania in the sense that you have a full Metroidvania map, there are ability and item gated pathways you will need to backtrack to, etc. Fast travel is from shrine to shrine. Anyway I am so glad I've finally tried this one out... this is a good example of why sometimes I need to stop paying such close attention to steam reviews. I'm absolutely loving this game. It's the right level of challenge for me and has all of the theme, color, story, and ambiance that I really need to have in a game. Looking forward to more of it!

Yes! If you are hesitating during this winter sale, here is what to expect: This game is the first Golden Axe with a huge bestiary, beautiful visuals, and a roguelite metroidvania core. You can even kick goblins to death before they escape and collect all their treasure, like in Golden Axe. You will need to grind a little. Revisit areas and fight enemies that respawn when you activate a checkpoint to earn more gold or gain experience to take down bosses. Character building is deep and rewarding. Hidden passages often hide valuable treasures, so keep your eyes open. The demo only hide elements of the visited area. The full game comes with more for that same area. If you were scared by the boss difficulty in the demo, fear no more. The complete game allows deeper exploration, which lets you come back stronger and get rid of it quickly. Replayability is high because you can try completely different characters with different stats and tactics. I am only height hours in, but I am hooked. The game is really fun. The only minor issues are some cheeky NPC comments and a few clunky bestiary entries, but the NPCs are still amusing and the monsters cool to fight. One thing to note if you play the demo: your save will not be used once you acquire the full game. You will have to fresh start.

This game is nice and very fun. A Metroidvania focused on exploration and character customization. The graphic is very nice (it reminded me of the various Trine games) and the story, although well defined, is mostly a trail that pushes you to explore the huge game world. There are 6 classes, but at level 25 you gain the ability to take skills from other class trees. This combined with there is no level cap makes the combinations practically infinite, however, I suggest staying focused on just one tree until you unlock the ability to respec your character... The real game begins only after defeating the first boss (the necromancer), unlocking the grappling hook and the ability to respec your character. Anyway there is a free, playable demo that allows you to try the game, it was very useful for me because I bought the game only after trying it. Many of the negative reviews and criticisms found online refer to older versions of the game because I haven't found a single one of the reported defects so far. So what better way to clear up any doubts than to download the demo and try it out? :)

Mandragora Review Playtime: ~30 hours Experience Level: Completed the game, planning more playthroughs with different classes Rating: 8.6/10 Introduction After completing Mandragora with around 30 hours of playtime—and planning to try more classes—I’ve gathered my thoughts. I won't comment on the EULA, as while it's important to some, it doesn't factor into my personal evaluation. This review focuses solely on the gameplay experience. Pros [*] Genre Execution: While Mandragora doesn’t introduce revolutionary changes to the Soulslike or Metroidvania genres, it blends them really well. [*] Story & Progression: The story isn’t groundbreaking but serves as a solid backbone for the gameplay. It kept me engaged and made progression enjoyable. [*] Build Variety: There’s a wide array of classes, weapons, and gear, allowing for deep customization. After level 20 or 25, you can reallocate your points, making experimentation with different builds easy and rewarding. [*] Boss Fights: There are many boss encounters. Some mini-bosses are reused, but I never felt it was excessive. The main bosses are unique, with well-designed, challenging movesets across all classes. That said, the "Fire Caster" class felt a bit overpowered against most of them. [*] Visuals & Design: The art direction is stunning, and enemy designs are top-tier. It’s one of the most visually beautiful games I’ve played recently. [*] Stability: I only encountered two minor visual bugs throughout my entire playthrough—nothing game-breaking or disruptive. [*] Side Content: The game is packed with side quests, bounty hunting, treasure hunts, and crafting. The importance of gathering blueprints and materials adds a lot of depth and replay value. Easily enough content for two or three full playthroughs. Cons [*] Runbacks: Some boss runbacks are extremely long. While the level designers did a good job implementing shortcuts, there were still at least three instances where dying meant a frustratingly long run back to the boss arena. [*] Platforming: Platforming sections in the Entropy areas felt forced—though the rift segments were optional, they didn’t quite fit the rest of the game’s flow. [*] Lack of New Game+: There’s no New Game+ at the moment. I’ve heard it’s planned for release in the summer, which would be a welcome addition. Conclusion Mandragora is an awesome game. I had a ton of fun, and even after finishing it, I’m still hooked. It has a few minor flaws, but they’re easily outweighed by its strengths. With a rich gameplay loop, excellent design, and high replayability, I highly recommend it. Final Score: 8.6/10

It's kinda sad to see so much hate and so many negative reviews about this game. Mandragora is not The Best Game of All Time ofcourse and it has lots of problems (like many other good games), but its actually great game and absolutley worth a try and absolutley worth its price. +Great artstyle, beautiful locations, it's just gorgeous +Beautiful soundtrack and sounddesign +Interesting talent tree design and wide build vireaty +Cool skill system and skill progression +Interesting lore First half of the game was refreshing and it was really hard to stop playing. Unfortunatley, someething happend after 3/4 of the game. At the last quarter of the game everething get worse: harder and less unnderstandable platforming; enemies increased in numbers and become stronger and harder to kill; crafting starts to feel like a grind, and not like a interesting progresson mechanic, like before; And last boss... it was absolutley on another level, every boss in the game was quite easy, but last one... out of nowhere it was like a torture. But overall this game is great, I recommend to give it a chance. Actually, besides all the problems game has, I am looking forward to see, what's developers gonna do next, in the end of the day this game shows interesting gamedesign, great art skills and big potential for the next projects.
