Replicat is honestly a rather odd concept to me: The age-old memory matching tile game, where you flip cards and try to get pairs (while inevitably forgetting the card you JUST flipped 5 seconds ago... or maybe that's just me) plus the Balatro-ish formula? Sure, there's all sorts of ways to use that formula, as more and more games are proving, but... memory matching? How do you make an entire game focused on that? The resulting mix is honestly pretty good, though I will say it took me a good while for this one to click, I bounced off of this at first. I dont have a very good memory, so I can find it a bit frustrating at times. But part of the game is finding ways to deal with that better. For instance, you might get effects that stamp the back of the tiles with color stamps... just showing what color that tile is, but not hinting at value or effect... or maybe you'll have a pair that has an auto effect, so the moment you hit the first one, the second reveals automatically and they are matched. Or maybe jokers (not the Balatro kind) that can match with whatever, of the same color. The overall flow of the game, and many mechanics, will probably be quite familiar if you've played any of this genre before. Do a round of matching, win if you hit the score target, lose if you miss it, and then off to the shop after every round, with a boss round happening at specific intervals. The different things that make up your build are familiar too. Your deck of cards/tiles works as you'd think, with the added caveat that every single one comes as a pair, so you are always adding two tiles to your deck when you make a purchase, not just one, so that's worth keeping in mind. And you've got curios, this game's version of Balatro's jokers. You can have as many of these as you want, and they do all sorts of screwy things. Essences, which are handed out after each boss fight, allow you to buff up your cards. There are no consumables though. You go into each round with just your build and nothing extra to get you out of a bind. Speaking of getting out of a bind, you're going to get INTO a bind many, many times. Replicat is hard. Very hard. At least I think so, anyway. It took me awhile to get one victory with the starting deck on the lowest difficulty, and even then, only barely. The different game mechanics sort of add up in just such a way that ups the difficulty beyond what you might expect. Your tiles do all sorts of things, but they dont do anything at all if mismatched. Multiplier tiles are super important, but they need to be matched at the tail end of each hand, because they multiply things that were matched before they were. If they're not the 5th match of a turn (as the max hand size is usually 5), they'll be less strong. If they're the FIRST match of the hand, they wont do anything at all, and that one can be bloody frustrating. Which brings me to what I think is the game's biggest problem: It is VERY reliant on those multiplier tiles. If you arent matching those, and very frequently matching them specifically at the end of each turn, you have already lost. As the score requirements go up, you might find yourself needing to match more than one multiplier in the same turn to hit it, which again, needs to go at the tail end of it all. So that's a very specific thing you NEED to use, which can miss entirely or operate at like 25% of what it should be because you matched it too early, and you need to be doing this constantly. Score tiles by themselves cant go high enough to work for you (usually). If you dont have any effects that are helping you find the cards, like stamps and whatnot, it gets even tougher to do this. And of course boss rounds jam even more wrenches into the gears. They might have anywhere from 2 to 4 effects, and some of these can be really nasty. Fortunately, you can see what all of the bosses in the run will be, and chances to reroll a boss actually pop up fairly often, particularly since one possible boss reward (you always choose 1 out of 4) is to reroll the next boss. So you have some more flexibility with these and more time to prepare, but that doesnt negate how tough they can be. Even though they can be aggravating, I do like how they're done here. Multiple effects can give them more complexity, and they tend to feel like an actual challenge a lot more often than in some other games in this genre. I think another downside for some players might be just that there's a high RNG factor here, in a lot of ways. But it's the tile matching concept... of course there's high luck here. If you dont like that, this might not be for you. As for aesthetics and all, the overall presentation is very bright and fun. Lots of colorful things with meme-tastic cats and a whole lot of meow sounds and satisfying CLANK noises when matching stuff. Overall, pretty good, even though it can be really brutal. If you're up for a challenge full of goofy cats and dont mind a hefty dose of RNG, there's a lot to love here.

Pretty much Memory Balatro. Just started and I already know this will probably be this years "just a few more rounds" game after getting Complettion++ in Balatro. Excellent for playing in between other games since it plays fast, have cute cats and similar "numbers go up"-dopamine kick that Balatro has. .

The visuals are vibrant, the cats are cute, the vibes are cosy. The dopamine hit when everything comes together and numbers skyrocket is amazing. Stop reading and go buy the game.
